A persistent
popular myth in corporate circles is that anyone who knows English and
speaks a foreign language well, or is a native speaker of that foreign
language, is automatically a good translator. In my own opinion, as a professional
translator with 25 years of experience, the truth is that translation ability
can only be measured by the quality of the product. Practice may not always
make perfect, but when it comes to translation work, a long history of
satisfied clients is, at the very least, a reliable indicator of that person's
skill and dedication to his or her profession. This is what The French
Connection provides-skill based on practice, not theory, and service
whose goal is to satisfy each client's particular needs.
Most independent translators whom I know are self-motivated individuals who have chosen their profession because of their love of a particular foreign language and their desire to promote its proper use. In some cases, they studied the language in school and became translators as a result of their passion for that language and culture. Some of them lived in the foreign country concerned so that they could steep themselves in its culture. Love of the language, not profit, was their primary motivation and point of departure. For many of us-myself included-that love and respect inspired a life's work. |
